Terror group, Islamic State, has released a video detailing the beheading of US journalist, Steven Sotloff.

Sotloff had been threatened with execution by IS in revenge for US air strikes on land that the group holds in Iraq.

He had been held hostage by  the group for more than a year, having been abducted on August 4, 2013.

The news comes two weeks after IS released video of the execution of US journalist, James Foley.

Sotlof appeared at the end of the video of Foley’s death, prompting his mother to beg IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to spare her son’s life.

The United States has already responded, White House spokesman, Josh Earnest, saying US officials were checking the reports as he could not confirm it’s authenticity.

“I’m not in a position to confirm the authenticity of that video or the reports,” BBC quoted Earnest as saying.

“If there is a video that’s been released, it’s something that will be analysed very carefully by the US government and our intelligence officials to establish its authenticity.”

The US has recently carried out dozens of air strikes against IS targets in Iraq, and it is believed that beheading is one of the groups vengeance measures.
