Senate President Bukola Saraki was scheduled to meet with John Oyegun, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress‎ (APC), and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at 12:45 pm on Thursday, but it has now been called off.

Bamikole Omishore, Saraki’s media aide, sent out a message at 12:25, which read: “‎His Excellency, Distinguished Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, will be at APC party secretariat at 12:45 to meet chairman and NWC. Press, please take note.”

But a few minutes later, he sent another message, terse this time: “Apologies, meeting has been cancelled.”

Omishore did not state any reason for the cancellation of the meeting.

‎Saraki became senate president unchallenged after his opponent and APC’s official candidate for the position, Ahmed Lawan (Yobe north), and his supporters missed the inauguration of the eighth senate on Tuesday.

Although he would have won nonetheless if the absentee senators were in attendance, owing to the massive support he received from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators ,Saraki has denied that he has any plan to defect to PDP, describing the insinuation of that as ” absurd and laughable.”

He also restated his commitment to APC, saying “he remains a loyal party member and a leader of the party, committed to contributing his quota to building the party and helping it to deliver its promise of change to Nigerian people‎”.
