Ojukwu: Police can quiz, prosecute anyone

Ojukwu: Police can quiz, prosecute anyone

Emmanuel Ojukwu, spokesman of the Nigeria police force, says the law enforcement agency has the right to prosecute anyone for criminal act.

“It lies with the investigators to determine who should be quizzed and/or prosecuted, as the case may be for criminal acts,” he said on Saturday.

But he denied that there was an order to arrest Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, speaker of the house of representatives, over Thursday’s fracas at the national assembly.

Sambo Dasuki, the national security adviser, also described the report as false.

Bello Fadile, a retired colonel and the director of special duties in the office of national security adviser, issued a statement on behalf of Dasuki on Saturday, blaming the media for the report.

“It is not only untrue and mere fabricated reports that the NSA met with the VP and ordered the arrest of Hon Tambuwal,” the statement read.

“The fact is that the national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki has been outside the country since Wednesday on pressing national security issues. To the best of our knowledge, there is no any order for the arrest of Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of the house of representatives.”

On his part, Tambuwal has pledged readiness to face the police anytime that he is invited.

“The honourable speaker wishes to state that he is a law-abiding citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who has no immunity against arrest and prosecution except privileges as may be provided by the legislative powers and privileges act,” Tambuwal said in a statement issued by his media aide.

“The speaker states for the records that he is available, ready and willing to answer any lawful invitation from any of the security agencies on any matter for which they may require his attention.”
