Nigerian troops have expelled Boko Haram militants from Mafa, a town in Borno state.

The defence headquarters announced the latest feat in the effort of the military to rid the northeast of insurgents through its Twitter handle @DefenceInfoNG on Thursday.

“Troops are now in full control of Mafa, Borno state after completing the operation to clear terrorists from the town yesterday evening,” it said.

The Nigerian military has been on an offensive streak against Boko Haram, freeing many towns and cities under the control of the terror group.

The highpoint of the operations of the military in northeast was the liberation of Baga, a fishing town in Borno where about 2, 000 people were reported killed.

Lately, the military has conducted air raids on Sambisa and Gwoza, strongholds of the insurgents, killing, capturing and forcing many of them to flee.

However, the successful operations of the military have not resulted in the rescue of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted from their school at Chibok, Borno state in April 2014.

The girls have spent about 11 months in captivity, but President Goodluck Jonathan has said that they are alive, and will be rescued soon.
