The forward operating base of the Nigerian Navy in Akwa Ibom says it has arrested four Ghanians and 10 Nigerians suspected of illegal fishing in the state.
Uche Aneke, the commanding officer of the base, on Wednesday handed over the suspects and their vessel to the federal department of fisheries in Calabar, Cross River state.
He said the suspects were arrested near the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) floating station in Ibaka beach on September 14 for illegal trawling.
He added that the vessel was seized within the Calabar channel, where they were actively engaged in illegal trawling.
“This incident came to light after a report from Eastern Regional Control Centre, Calabar indicated that MFT LAMU 1, had been involved in illegal fishing activities within five nautical miles offshore the Calabar Channel, and within FOB Ibaka’s area of operation,” NAN quoted Aneke as saying.
He said the command is committed to upholding Nigeria’s maritime laws and ensuring the sustainability of the coastal waters for national development.
Stella Anuforo, fisheries officer at the federal department of fisheries and aquaculture in Calabar, thanked the navy for securing the maritime environment.
She said the department would further investigate the suspects and take necessary actions.
