The maiden Caesar Okogeri Club Cricket Championship commenced in Enugu state on Saturday.

The maiden grassroots cricket competition is aimed at supporting the young talents and potential that abound in the sport in the state and south-east region of Nigeria.

The three-day event that has attracted about 100 kid cricketers is held at the St. Patrick Secondary School Emene, Enugu.

Ogbonnaya Okogeri, the chairman of the Enugu State Cricket Association (ESCA), said the programme was among the activities by the board to deepen cricket development in the country.

“This competition will be the melting point of the growing developmental effort of the ESCA after we recently intensified the sports outreach activities to a commendable height,” Okogeri said.

Among the competitors include St. Patrick Cricket Club, UNN Cricket Club, Coal City Cricket Club, and Rising Sun Cricket Club.

The organisers said the competitors represent the best cricket talents in Enugu state.

“We expect a keenly contested championship as well as exceptional display of cricket skills that would get consideration from the national team coaches,” Okogeri added.

The competition will be on a T20 round-robin. Apart from the trophy, individual prizes will also be given to outstanding talents in different categories.
