13 rescued as death toll from Lagos building collapse rises to five

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says the death toll from the building collapse in the Ojodu-Berger area has increased to five.

The three-storey building, located at 9&10 Oremeta street, crumbled on Saturday, trapping employees of a restaurant and customers beneath the debris.

The agency had initially reported that one person died while nine were injured in the incident.

In a fresh update, LASEMA said five persons have so far been confirmed dead, with 13 others rescued alive as at 05:48am on April 20.

The agency said the deceased include three females and two adult males, bringing the total number of victims to 17.

LASEMA said safety measures have been put in place and the area has been cordoned-off to facilitate ongoing search and rescue efforts.
