$15.5m accounts freeze: Judge’s absence stalls Patience Jonathan’s suit

The suit filed by Patience Jonathan, former first lady, at the federal high court, Lagos, challenging the freezing of her account, has been stalled.

The case which was slated for continued hearing on Tuesday, could not proceed following the absence of Mohammed Idris, the judge handling it.

According to NAN, the judge’s absence was as a result of a workshop he was attending elsewhere.

Jonathan had filed the suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in 2016, to challenge the ‘no debit order’ placed by the EFCC on four bank accounts linked to her.

Deposited in the Skye Bank accounts is a total of $15.5 million.

Though the accounts were said to be opened in the names of the four companies linked to Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, former aide to the ex-president, Jonathan filed the suit, laying claims to the funds.

At the last adjourned date on May 2, Ifedayo Adedipe appeared for the applicant, Nnemeka Omewa appeared for the EFCC, while Lanre Ogunlesi appeared for the second defendant.

The defence counsel had informed the court that Omewa sought for leave to file additional processes, although same had not been served on him.

The other counsels had also informed the court that they had yet to go through the processes, prompting the judge to adjourn.

Jonathan has been having a running battle with the EFCC at the courts over corruption-related cases.

Just recently, the anti-graft agency secured a court order to seize $8.4 million and about N7.4 billion found in bank accounts linked to her.
