16 burnt to death as truck collides with bus in Lagos

Sixteen people have been confirmed dead following an accident that happened at Alaro city, Epe in Lagos.

The accident occurred on Tuesday.

Speaking on the development on Tuesday, Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesman of the Lagos police command, said 10 out of the 16 victims were burnt beyond recognition.

He said security agents were able to rescue five persons from the scene of the accident, and they were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

“Six bodies were recovered, while 10 were burnt beyond recognition. Five victims have been taken to hospital,” Hundeyin said.

“The incident happened today on Epe-Ibeju Lekki Expressway by Alaro City Estate, involving one Mack truck and one Toyota Hiace bus.”

Also reacting to the incident in a statement, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the collision between the truck and bus caused two other vehicles to get burnt.

Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, director-general of LASEMA, said five of the male adults that died in the accident are from Katsina.

“Upon arrival of the LASEMA Response Team, LRT Whale’s Squad at Epe at the incident scene, it was revealed that a truck conveying sand had a head-on collision with a hummer commuter bus with 6 passengers on board,” the statement reads. 

“Furthermore the two vehicles got burnt as a result of the impact of the collision. Unfortunately, 5 adult males (all from Katsina State) were burnt beyond recognition. The commodities were bagged and handed over to their relatives.”

Meanwhile, in Baise LGA of Calabar, the Cross River capital, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the death of five people in an accident that involved two vehicles.

Abdullahi Hassan, Cross River sector commander of the FRSC, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, adding that the accident involved a truck loaded with cement and a Toyota vehicle.

“We are aware of the crash. Our people went there to do rescue. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the actual cause of the crash,” he said.

“Seven people were involved. Five persons lost their lives.”
