16 soldiers face trial as army inaugurates court martial in Plateau

The Nigerian Army says 16 soldiers and an officer would be facing trial over alleged involvement in murder and dealing in arms.

Mansur Mairuwa, acting deputy director of legal services 3 division, spoke on Wednesday during the inauguration of a court martial in Jos, Plateau capital.

The court is situated at Rhino Officers Mess, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos.

Mairuwa said the court is necessary to ensure accountability and compliance within the military justice system.

“An officer and 16 soldiers will face trial in the general court marshal for offences related to murder, arms dealing and other serious charges,” he said.

“This action underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability among its personnel in compliance with international best practice and rule of law.”

Also speaking, Laifis Bello, president of the general court marshal, said it is important to uphold discipline, regimentation, and professionalism within the army.

Bello who read the convening order of the court, said “all proceedings of the court will be guided by the principles of natural justice, equity and fairness”.
