17th WAC: Nigeria’s Ese Brume wins bronze in women’s long jump

Ese Brume, track and field athlete, has won Nigeria’s first and only medal at the 17th edition of the World Athletics Championship at the Khalifa International stadium in Doha.

Brume became the third Nigerian, after Chioma Ajunwa and Blessing Okagbare to make it to the long jump final at the Athletics championship, after leaping 6.91m to win the bronze medal on Sunday.

Germany’s Malaika Mihambo won the gold medal with a 7.30m jump while Ukraine’s Maryna Behk-Romanchuk jumped 6.92m for the silver.

The other Nigeria medal hopeful on the last day of the championship, Tobi Amusan, finished fourth in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.49 seconds.

American pair of Nia Ali and Kendra Harrison came first and second in 12.34, 12.46 seconds respectively while Danielle Williams of Jamaica claimed the bronze in 12.47 seconds.

Brume becomes the first athlete in the past six years to win a medal for Nigeria at the championships.

Okagbare won Nigeria’s first silver medal in long jump in 2013 at the 14th edition in Moscow, Russia.

She put together a fantastic long jump performance following her 6.83m and 6.91m openers. She jumped 6.90m in the third round.
