The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of 18 persons involved in an accident along the Kano-Ringim road.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, FRSC sector commander, who confirmed the incident on Saturday, said 12 others sustained various injuries, while five persons escaped unhurt.

According to Abdullahi, the accident which involved two commercial vehicles, occurred in Zakirai town, along the Kano-Ringim road in Gabasawa LGA of the state at about 8:35 pm on Friday.

Abdullahi said the accident was caused by overspeeding and loss of control.

“We received a call about the accident at about 8:35 p.m. on Friday and dispatched our personnel to the scene to rescue the victims,” NAN quoted Abdullahi as saying.

“The accident involved a total of 35 passengers in two buses, out of which 18 were burnt beyond recognition while 12 others sustained serious injuries.”

The sector commander said some of the corpses were given mass burial at the accident scene, while others were handed over to their relatives.

He added that the injured victims were taken to the Murtala Mohammed General Hospital in Kano for treatment.

During a visit to the crash scene on Saturday, Abdullahi warned motorists, particularly intracity and inter-state drivers to desist from overloading, excessive speeding, wrongful overtaking and other traffic violations that could lead to a road crash.

He further said the FRSC would intensify public enlightenment and undertake stringent patrol interventions, including the operation of mobile courts to stem the rising tide of intracity auto crashes.
