The damaged bus conveying the 20 Kano athletes returning from Gateway Games
At least twenty-one athletes were feared dead as Kano state’s contingent to the just-concluded National Sports Festival was involved in an accident on Saturday.
Umar Faggie, the state’s sports commission chairman, confirmed that the auto crash occurred at the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura LGA of the state.
The athletes were traveling in a bus belonging to the Kano state sports commission when the vehicle reportedly flipped off the bridge.
Survivors of the crash have been rushed to Kura general hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The exact number of injured persons has not been disclosed as rescue operations continue.
Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, was among the notable Nigerians who expressed “deep sorrow” over the deaths of the athletes.
In a post via X, Atiku described the victims as “the very best of our nation dedicated, talented, and full of promise”.

The former Adamawa governor lamented the “profound loss” to their families, Kano state, and Nigeria’s sporting community and called for “stricter safety measures” to prevent such tragedies.
He also extended prayers for the injured, who are receiving treatment at the hospital.
“I am heartbroken by news of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 21 Kano State athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta,” the post reads.
“These young men and women who have been cut in their prime represent the very best of our nation; dedicated, talented, and full of promise.

“Their untimely passing is a profound loss not only to their families and the people of Kano but to the entire country.
“It is imperative that we put in place and enforce safety measures to stem accidents and prevent loss of lives.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and Nigeria’s sporting community.
“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may the injured recover swiftly. -AA”

At the Gateway Games in Abeokuta, Kano state finished 13th on the medals table with 29 medals, including six gold.
