22-year-old ‘health worker’ commits suicide in Adamawa over ‘death of boyfriend’

The police command in Adamawa says a 22-year-old health worker has  committed suicide at the Viniklang community in Girei LGA of the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, Suleiman Nguroje, the police spokesperson in Adamawa, said the deceased, Florence Vandi, drank a poisonous substance known locally as “Otapiyapiya”.

Nguroje said the late Vandi was attached to Girei primary health centre in the state.

He added that the victim took the decision to end her life after the death of her boyfriend, who died after a brief illness.

“The deceased, an indigene of Michika LGA in the state, ended her life by consuming the local substance while protesting the death of her boyfriend,” NAN quoted Nguroje as saying.

“She took the unfortunate decision few hours after the death of her boyfriend called Nuhu Boniface who died after a brief illness while receiving treatment at the hospital.”

Nguroje, said Afolabi Babalola, the commissioner of police, in the state has expressed sadness over the incident.

He added that the police chief advised members of the public to avoid taking the law into their hands.
