Ben Murrray-Bruce, Senator representing Bayelsa-east, says Dino Melaye, his Kogi-west counterpart, jumped out of a moving vehicle because police fired tear gas at him.

Melaye was reportedly being led to court by the policemen on Tuesday afternoon when he attempted to escape by jumping out of a vehicle.

He sustained injuries in the process and landed in the hospital.

But Bruce said his colleague who is asthmatic, forced his way out of the vehicle because he could not breathe after the teargas was released.

According to him, Melaye “literally escaped death.”

“Just met with @dino_melaye. Very sad to hear what transpired. Dino is asthmatic, yet while in transit, the police gassed him & he could barely breathe. Second time they gassed him, he had to force his way out of the vehicle. Dino literally escaped death. SAD!” Bruce wrote on Twitter.

On Wednesday, the lawmakers had suspended plenary to see Melaye at the National Hospital, Abuja, where he was said to be at the intensive care unit.

They were led by Senate President Bukola Saraki. Shehu Sani, a senator from Kaduna, and Ahmad Lawan, senate majority leader, were among the senators who accompanied Saraki.

The senate has summoned Ibrahim Idris, inspector-general of police, over Melaye’s issue.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Saturday commenced the recall process of Melaye but he emerged victorious as the low turn out of his constituents marred the process.
