About 26 people were killed on Wednesday in DR Congo after a high-voltage cable broke and fell.

According to the BBC, the incident affected houses at Matadi-Kibala district on the outskirts of capital city of Kinshasa, and a nearby market.

The cable was said to have snapped with the live end landing on houses and a rain-filled ditch, leaving a number of people dead on the spot.

Many of the victims are said to be market women.

Charles Mbutamuntu, spokesman for the Kinshasa provincial government, said the bodies had been taken to the mortuary.

While the cause of the mishap is not yet known, Mbutamuntu said an investigation into the incident was in progress.

The traders said the market often gets flooded when it rained, with workers and shoppers having to wade through water.
