The late Samuel Eweni, father of the suspect
Police in New Orleans, United States, have arrested Chukwuebuka Eweni, a 27-year-old Nigerian, over a stabbing incident that left his father dead and two sisters injured.
Family members told WWL Louisiana, a local paper, that Eweni had long suffered from an undisclosed mental illness but was never violent until last Tuesday.
They described the evening of that day as ordinary until Eweni grabbed a knife and stabbed Samuel, his father, and two sisters. Family members said they don’t know what set him off.
Samuel, professor of computer sciences at the Southern University, New Orleans, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

Joseph Bouie, university chancellor, said Samuel was “a mentor and a guiding light” to so many students.
One of Eweni’s sisters was released from the hospital, with the other still being treated as of last Wednesday. She was also expected to survive.
After the stabbing, relatives said they found out Eweni went to New Orleans East Hospital, where he would routinely check himself in for mental support, to seek help.

Without knowing anything about the crime, the hospital reportedly transferred him to a facility in Jefferson Parish. It was at the second facility that police tracked him down and took him into custody the following morning after obtaining an arrest warrant.
A police statement said Eweni was wanted on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
Police say Eweni is being evaluated at a medical facility.
