Onelife Initiative for Human Development, a youth-focused non-governmental organisation, on Saturday, celebrated the International Youth Day which falls on August 12 every year.

In line with the theme chosen by the United Nations for 2018 International Youth Day, the organisation launched the “safe space wall”, a unique wall mural featuring artistic designs by youths.

Sola Fagorusi, acting executive director, Onelife Initiative, said youths in Nigeria deserve to consciously own and be given safe spaces.

“The theme is coming at a time when youths are becoming the centre of attention and a bride, especially in the political space,” Fagorusi said.

The “safe space wall” depicted images that evoked discussions on the implication of vote buying, and the lingering debate on adopting a safe abortion stance, in the wake of unwanted pregnancies.

Commenting on the wall mural, Laolu Afolabi, a representative of Oyo State Agency for Youth Development said youths can only get empowered if they collect their permanent voter cards (PVCs) and register to vote.

Adesola Fanimokun, a representative of the Nigerian Urban and Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), said that in terms of sexual and reproductive health, youths need access to safe spaces and life skills in order to thrive.
