The Kebbi state government says 30 students and a teacher of the Federal Government College (FGC), Birnin Yauri, abducted by bandits, have regained their freedom.

Yahaya Sarki, the special adviser on media to Governor Atiku Bagudu, confirmed the development on Saturday.

In June 2021, some gunmen stormed the school and abducted many students and teachers.

The gunmen invaded the school on motorcycles and engaged police officers in a crossfire — wounding some of the students, while one died in the process.

Sarki said the victims would undergo medical screening before reuniting them with their families.

“Today, Saturday 8th January 2022, 30 students of Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri, and one teacher have arrived Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State capital, following their release,” Sarki said.

“They shall undergo medical screening and support while being reunited with their families.

“We thank all security agencies and those who have helped in securing the release while congratulating Mr President, Muhammadu Buhari, for the success.”

In October, TheCable had reported that 30 of the abducted students and three teachers were also released.
