Shooting Stars’ assistant coach slumps, dies on training pitch

Akin Olowokere, an assistant coach of Shooting Stars Sports Club, has died on the training pitch.

In a statement, the club said the coach “slumped and passed away” during training on Monday morning.

Shooting Stars were preparing for their second game of the ongoing 2025 ValueJet Cup, a preseason tournament.

The club was billed to take on Abia Warriors by 4 pm at the Remo Stars stadium in Ikenne.

“Coach Olowokere was not only a dedicated and passionate football tactician, but also a mentor, friend, and father figure to the players and many others,” the club statement reads.

“He exhibited compassion within his short stint with the club and the wider football community. His commitment to the growth and success of our team was unwavering, as we hope his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, players, and the entire Nigerian football family during this difficult time. We stand with them in prayers and solidarity, and we pray for the strength to bear this painful loss.”

Olowokere was part of the new technical crew unveiled by the team ahead of the forthcoming 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

He was a former player and assistant coach of Sunshine Stars of Akure.
