‎Four-time African Cup of Nations champions Lions of Cameroon are making headlines as Gabon prepares to host the continent in the championship that started in 1957.

Seven major players have  announced withdrawal from the competition.

They are: Liverpool defender Matip, Allan Nyom of West Bromwich Albion, Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana, Guy Roland Ndy Assembe of Nancy and Andre Zambo Anguissa from Olympique Marseille.

Others are Maxime Poundje of Bordeaux and Ibrahim Amadou from Lille.

The absence though of Matip is no surprise as he had literally quit the team .

Onana, Assembe and Nyom prefered to honour their European clubs rather than Cameroon. Poundje eventually threw in his lot with France.

Cameroon are drawn in Group A alongside hosts Gabon, Burkina Faso and debutants Guinea-Bissau in the continental game.
