5. SYMPTOMS OCCUR ROUGHLY A WEEK AFTER INFECTION

Symptoms of EVD usually occur between two and 21 days after exposure to the virus, but most symptoms manifest in eight to 10 days. This is immediately followed by severe acute viral illness often characterised by sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat. These primary signs are subsequently followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function. In some cases, there is both internal and external bleeding.
