Gunmen have killed nine persons in an attack on Fanteka village in Daraga district of Maru Local government area of Zamfara state.

Sanusi Amiru, police public relations officer, confirmed the incident to NAN on Saturday, saying it was a reprisal attack.

Amiru said six of those killed were members of the community, while the other three were members of the gang gunned down by the villagers.

He said a team of armed policemen had been able to restore peace to the affected area, while a combined team of security men were on the trail of the gunmen.

However, he warned that the law prohibiting illegal possession of firearms was still in place and advised people against taking laws into their hands.

Sule Musa, a witness, said the gunmen had earlier invaded the community, but were chased out by the villagers, who shot and killed three of them.

He said they reinforced and returned later, killing six and injuring several villagers.
