After many months of speculation, Louis Van Gaal, Manchester United manager, has been sacked.

The Dutchman was shown the way out of the club with one year left on his three-year contract, according to the BBC.

Despite winning the English FA cup on Saturday, the management of the club insisted on his departure, with Jose Mourinho, former Chelsea boss, set to take over at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal joined United in 2014, after an uninspiring show by David Moyes, former Everton manager who took over from legendary manager, Alex Ferguson, in 2013.

Before coming to Manchester, Van Gaal, led Netherlands to the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The 64-year-old was expected to keep Manchester United in the top four and possibly win the league in his second year, but he failed at both goals, with United set to miss out of the UEFA Champions League in the 2016/2017 season.

Mourinho is expected to be announced on Tuesday, after months of secret deals and negotiations with the top management of the English side.

The 53-year-old worked with Van Gaal at FC Barcelona, before moving on to become a lead-coach at Benfica in 2000.

“I developed a lot of my own ideas. Louis is Louis and Mourinho is Mourinho, there is no comparison, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t learn from him because I did,” Mourinho said of Van Gaal, adding that he “is honest and pragmatic”.

Van Gaal, on the other hand said he was impressed with Mourinho, saying: “José was a little bit arrogant but I like that. I like people with a high opinion of themselves.”
