President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed sadness at Tuesday’s death of second-republic politician, Alhaji Umaru Dikko.

Dikko passed away at a hospital in London, aged 78.

Speaking through his special adviser on media and publicity, Reuben Abati, Jonathan said he received news of Dikko’s death with sadness.

“The president extends sincere commiserations to the family, friends and political associates of the former minister of transport during the second republic, who also played a leading role in the National Party of Nigeria which controlled the federal government in that dispensation,” read a statement by Abati.

“He joins them in mourning the renowned political leader who, in spite of advanced age, continued to actively contribute to the nurturing and strengthening of democracy in Nigeria until the end of his life.

“President Jonathan firmly believes that Alhaji Umaru Dikko’s significant contributions, especially his lifelong advocacy for stronger political parties, greater discipline within political parties and the supremacy of political parties have assured him of a place in the annals of Nigeria’s political development.”

He prayed that God Almighty will receive Alhaji Umaru Dikko’s soul and grant him eternal rest.

Mr. President should please leave Dikko alone. He came, he saw and he conquered. We have so much problems in our hands at the moment. I am just tired of his Chief Mourner attitude of our President. Every death announced, the President either sent powerful letter to mourn the deceased or attend the burial in person! What about tens of hundreds Nigerians the Boko Haram infidels have sent to their early graves? We need to think right in this country. May God be with us.
