The track and field event of the ongoing Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games do not start until Sunday, but Team Nigeria cannot wait for the commencement of the mother of all sports.

The team expects a better medal haul in Scotland than what it achieved at the Delhi 2010 Games.

Technical co-coordinator of the track and team, Yussuf Alli, a gold medalist at the Auckland 1990 Commonwealth, revealed that fleet-footed queen of track and field, Blessing Okagbare, is in contention for the ultimate medal in 100m, 200m, Long Jump and 4x100m.

With the absence of Fraser-Pryce, Okagbare is the lady to beat for the 100m and 200m gold medal.

Alli also tipped the 4x400m women, 200 women, Long Jump, Triple Jump, 110m hurdles, 4x400m, and 4×100 women as events that Team Nigeria track and field team has good chance of winning medals in.

He also revealed that the athletes are in good spirit; and they are injury-free and ready to go.

The venue for the event is the Hampden Park, in Mount Florida area of Glasgow. With a seating capacity of 52,025, it serves as the national stadium of football in Scotland, and is also used for music concerts and other sporting events. But from Sunday till Saturday, it will be the home of athletics.

British crowd favourite Mo Farah is out due to illness, but athletics enthusiasts will throng in to watch Usain Bolt, the Jamaican six-time Olympic champion, who will be running the 4x100m relay.
