Mike Pence US Vice President used his personal email to conduct state business as Indiana governor, his office has confirmed following a report by the Indianapolis Star.

The contents of his AOL email account were revealed after it was hacked.

According to the report, Pence used the private email account to discuss “sensitive issues with top advisers”.

Some of the issues Pence discussed with homeland security were Indiana’s response to security attacks and his security.

The newspaper said the account was hacked before he became Donald Trump’s running mate, last summer.

During the campaigns, Pence and Trump criticised Hillary Clinton, democratic presidential nominee, for using a private server to discuss sensitive government issues.

Marc Lotter, a spokesman, said Pence could not be compared with Clinton because the former secretary of state set up a private server in her home while the vice-president during his tenure Indiana governor did not handle any classified material.

He said Pence maintained a state email account and a personal email account.

Lotter said at the end of his term, Pence hired the Indianapolis law firm of Barnes & Thornburg to conduct a review of all of his communications and that the review is still ongoing.

According to him, any correspondence between Pence’s AOL account and any aides using a state email account would have been automatically archived.
