The Adamawa police command says it has arrested an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) who allegedly killed seven farmers in the state.

The arrest was made after Progressive Mind for Development Initiate, a civil society organisation (CSO) submitted a petition against the ASP.

Abubakar Abdulsalam, president of the CSO, alleged that the officer (who was unnamed), shot seven farmers to death on November 23, 2017.

Describing the incident, Abdusalam said the ASP who was in charge of a ‘Safer Highways Patrol Team’, had arrested the farmers while they were working on the outskirts of Gombi town.

He said they were tied and shot to death.

“We as a concerned organization consider the act of the suspect (policeman) as an act against the provision of the constitution and infringement on the fundamental rights of the people in question,” the petition read.

“If such act is not checked it will continue to spread like wildfire and eventually Nigeria will be unsafe for its citizens.”

Othman Abubakar, spokesman of Adamawa police command, said investigation into the case is underway.
