NGO launches exhibition for preservation of Igbo culture

The Centre for Memories, a non-governmental repository centre for the history and culture of Ndigbo, officially launched its inaugural exhibition on December 28.

The exhibition designed by Uzoma Okoye, managing director, Etu Odi communications and curated by Ifeanyi Onwuegbucha, held at Umoji street, Independence Layout, Enugu state.

The exhibition titled, ‘Ola Ndi Igbo: Igbo Contributions to Nigeria and the World until 1970’, detailed significant contributions of Ndigbo in various spheres of human endeavour including the arts, sciences, education, sports, literature, enterprise.

Directors of the Centre for Memories – Nkem Nweke, Nkiru Okpareke, Jude Ilo, Obi Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, Chairman and Patron, Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli, Innocent Chukwuma, representative of Ford Foundation Office of West Africa, Hubert Eze and Uche Unigwe, directors Nigerian Breweries at the opening of the Centre for Memories 

According to a statement from the centre, the exhibition, which will include photos, artefacts, Uli art, the origin of Ndigbo and profiles of some Ndigbo in Nigeria and in the diaspora, will last till March.

Guests used the ‘Wall of Memories’ to capture their most enduring memories most of which were about the legacies of the 1967 civil war.

The centre’s primary purpose is the conservation and promotion of Igbo history, arts and culture through a combination of activities including exhibitions, dialogue sessions, scholarly research, Igbo language classes, book readings, activities for children, and an artisan corner for Igbo artistry.
