President Muhammadu Buhari says the Dapchi schoolgirl yet to be released from Boko Haram custody will not be abandoned.

Leah Sharibu is the only student of Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe state, who is still in captivity.

One hundred and ten students were abducted on February 19. While five died, others were released apart from Sharibu.

The insurgents held her back because she refused to denounce her Christian faith.

Commenting on this via his Twitter handle on Thursday, Buhari said the federal government would do everything within its power to bring back the girl.

“I received the news of the return of our Dapchi daughters with great joy. And I look forward to receiving them at the state house,” he wrote.

“I thank everyone who was involved in the negotiations for their return. It is disheartening that one of the girls, Leah Sharibu, remains in captivity. Let me assure that I am as committed to her freedom as I was to the girls’ freedom when all 110 of them were in captivity.

“We will do everything in our power to bring Leah back safely.”

He also expressed sympathy with the parents of the girl “who must watch other parents rejoice while their own daughter remains in captivity.”

“It is my responsibility, under the constitution of Nigeria, to protect all Nigerians—and I will always strive to do that. Leah will not be abandoned,” he added.
