Local vigilantes and volunteers from Kuyello district in Kaduna state on Monday chased away suspected bandits form Layin-lasan, a village in Birnin-Gwari local government area of Kaduna.

Armed men on motorbikes were said to have attacked the town in the afternoon, injuring at least three people.

The village, which is about 96 kilometers from Birnin-Gwari along Birnin-Gwari-Funtua road, has recorded different attacks of late.

Witnesses said the suspects fled to Hamada forest in Sabuwa local government area of Katsina state following the intervention of the vigilance group.

Residents have lamented about the lack of security personnel in the area.

Birnin-Gwari has continued to make headlines for armed banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping.

Two weeks ago, Zubairu Gwari, emir of Birnin Gwari, asked his subjects to defend themselves against those invading their communities.

“We can’t be fools to wait for somebody that will not come. Nobody can stop me from telling my people to protect themselves. And that is what we are doing now because the policemen that are in Birnin Gwari cannot protect. The soldiers that are being brought come and sometimes make matters worse. I am also appealing to the president to come and see things for himself, because we are also Nigerians,” he had said in an interview.
