Court nullifies ‘fraudulent’ Rivers APC ward, LG congresses

The Rivers high court has nullified the ward, local government and state congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held on May 19, 20 and 21 respectively.

Justice Chiwendu Nwogu nullified the congresses in his ruling on Wednesday.

Nwogu said the process leading to the emergence of Ojukaye Flag-Amachree as Rivers chairman of APC was fraudulent.

He said the APC should return to the status quo of May 11, 2018, pending the determination of the substantive suit and adjourned until June 26 for further hearing.

The court had on May 11 issued a ruling stopping the local government congress.

The ruling was sequel to a controversial ward congress held in the state on May 5.

The Rivers APC factions led by Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, and Magnus Abe, senator representing Rivers south-east, had clashed over the congress.

Abe had gone to the court to get an injunction to stop the local government congress from holding but the Amaechi faction went ahead with the exercise.

The leadership of the party later cancelled the exercise and rescheduled it to May 19 and May 20. That exercise has now been nullified.

Abe and Amaechi, former governor of the state, have been at loggerheads over the party politics in Rivers.
