Manchester clubs, City and United, dropped points in their quest for the league and top-four finish respectively.

Man City suffered a surprise 1-2 loss at Newcastle United despite taking the lead in the third minute of the encounter, while Man United played a 2-2 draw with Burnley.

Sergio Aguero tapped in the opener from four yards after just 24 seconds to give City the lead.

In a match they were tipped to win comfortably, Pep Guardiola’s men had an Aguero goal cancelled by the referee who adjudged De Bruyne to have played against the whistle, but they did not create much and Newcastle struck after the hour.

Solomon Rondon converted a header from 12 yards, while the winner arrived 10 minutes from time via a penalty. Fernandinho conceded the spot kick and Matt Richie converted to seal a remarkable win for the Magpies.

The loss sees the Citizens trail Liverpool by four points and the Reds can go seven points clear with a win on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils went behind to Ashley Barnes’ header on 51 minutes and the Clarets doubled their lead on 81 minutes with another header from Chris Wood who capitalised on the lack of organisation in United’s defence.

With his eight-game unbeaten run under threat, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought on Lingard and the English forward won the penalty which Paul Pogba converted on 87 minutes, while the Red Devils levelled two minutes into injury time through Victor Lindelof.

The draw means they are two points behind Chelsea and Arsenal- who won 2-1 against Cardiff- in the race for a top four position, while also bringing a halt to their eight-game winning streak.
