A total of 116 Boko Haram members who attacked Amchide, a border town in Cameroon, have been killed, the Cameroonian army said on Thursday.

Residents told the BBC that the gunmen attacked Amchide on Wednesday, some arriving in two vehicles and many others on foot.

They raided the market area, setting fire to shops and more than 50 houses.

News of the attack on Amchide and the killing of the 116 Boko Haram members came at the time news filtered out that men believed to be the sect’s members invaded Bintiri, a remote village in Borno, killing at least 33 people and abducting many more.

According to a survivor who spoke with BBC, the attack happened on Sunday but the news is only just breaking out after survivors managed to reach Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

He said Boko Haram militants seized young men, women and children from the village, after killing 33 of them.

He added that after the attack, he returned to the village where he helped in the burial of 33 bodies.

His testimony was confirmed by a local official, who also didn’t want his name published.

The latest abduction validates reports that the insurgents regularly invade the northeastern states of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa, carrying out series of abductions that go unreported.

More than 219 girls abducted in Chibok, Borno state, on April 14 have still not been released.
