The senate has summoned Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), over the judgement secured by the Process and Industrial Development Limited (P&ID) against Nigeria.

The senate also asked officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to appear alongside Malami.

This followed a motion sponsored by Micheal Bamidele, senator representing Ekiti central.

While moving the motion on the floor of the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday, Bamidele said there was a need for the AGF to brief the relevant committees of the senate on the matter.

The lawmaker said the issue was an important one that needs the attention of the national assembly.

The motion was adopted after it was put to a voice vote by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

Malami and officials of the NNPC are expected to appear before senate committees on judiciary and petroleum (upstream).

P&ID had won a $9.6 billion judgement against Nigeria in a British court.

The company claimed it entered a contract to build a gas processing plant in Calabar, Cross River state, with the Nigerian government, but that the deal collapsed because the government did not fulfil its own end of the bargain.

It then sued Nigeria, and secured judgement in its favour.
