The OpenFees Stakeholders’ Forum says there is a need to create alternative sources of funding for basic education in Nigeria.

This is contained in a communique signed by Stephanie Ronald which was issued at the end of the stakeholders meeting in Abuja.

The stakeholders which were drawn from different sectors including government and students noted that there is a need to accommodate people with disabilities and special needs into the system.

“That there is an urgent need for improved data across the value chain, but especially in the schools among policymakers and the private sector to assist all involved in making informed decisions and also to assist in evaluation,” the communique read.

“That there is a need for accountability and transparency among all stakeholders’ in order to inspire and sustain trust and confidence in the system.

“That there is a need for greater inclusiveness in private sector intervention in order to accommodate the needs of persons with disability and other vulnerable groups.

“That government should create an enabling environment for greater collaboration with non-state actors.

“That in order to expand the funding/resource base for education, there is the need to explore creative and alternative sources of funding for education. These options may include using the school alumni and exploring a Diaspora education fund among others.”
