NCC: 5G technology to undergo three months trial before approval

The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) says the fifth-generation network technology (5G) would undergo three months trial before actual approval and rollout in the country.

NAN reports that Umar Danbatta, the executive vice-chairman of NCC, made this known on the sidelines of the 2019 Mobile and Disruptive Technology (MoDITECH) Forum which held recently in Lagos.

He said the pre-approval trial would enable the commission to see the key attributes it attained as the technology was like a proof of concept to be carried out by operators with the existing frequency and spectrum.

According to executive vice-chairman, who spoke in proxy, the proof of concept would be tested by all of NCC’s major vendors in Nigeria and the commission has taken steps on a digital revolution with the financial sector as major beneficiaries.

He, however, also stated that there are emerging new technologies that the commission needs to monitor before these are deployed.

”As such, there is a need to put in place the right framework for technology to rise technically. Very soon, there will be the deployment of 4G in every city to make people in a rural area have access to reliable internet services,” he said.

In August, Danbatta had announced NCC’s approval of the spectrum for the country’s trial of 5G services while stating that the commission had negotiated the counterpart funding for the infrastructure companies to implement the technology.
