Nigeria hit a positive record on Monday with 829 COVID-19 patients discharged within 24 hours.

This is the country’s highest figure of daily recoveries — the previous 24-hour record was on July 2 with 649 people discharged.

A total of 18,203 persons have now recovered from COVID-19 in all 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

However, the number of new infections also recorded an increase on Monday, making it the highest number of cases in about one week since July 18, when the country recorded 653 new cases.

According to the update by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday, 648 new samples tested positive for the coronavirus in 20 states and the FCT.

Aside from Lagos which recorded 180 new cases, Plateau also confirmed a record figure with 148 positive samples; Imo, Bauchi and Borno had the lowest figures with one new case each.

With two new fatalities, the death toll currently stands at 860, while out of a total of 41,180 confirmed infections, 22,117 people still have the virus.

In line with efforts to ensure that the spread of the virus is curtailed, the federal government has again appealed to Nigerians to adhere strictly to safety protocols.

Speaking at the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja on Monday, Boss Mustapha, the PTF chairman, expressed disappointment over the current state of affairs, and called for more caution.

”Our analysis has shown that people over 50 years of age, especially those with underlying factors, remain most at risk. This position is backed by the fact that 65 percent of fatalities recorded in Nigeria are in this category,” he said.

“That brings me to the need to appeal to Nigerians on the need for a change of behaviour and compliance with guidelines and measures put in place. If you do not need to go outside your home, please stay indoors. Avoid large gatherings and observe all the measures.

“In recent times, our risk communication teams have developed messages aimed at resonating very well with different demographic groups.

“The common string is the message for compliance and the proper wearing of face masks and coverings in public spaces.”
