Juventus, Italian Serie A Champions, have sacked Maurizio Sarri, their coach, barely a day after the club was knocked out of the Champions League in the last-16 stage by Lyon.

The Turin-based club broke the news in a two-paragraph statement published on its website on Saturday.

“Juventus Football Club announces that Maurizio Sarri has been relieved of his post as coach of the First Team,” the statement read.

“The club would like to thank the coach for having written a new page in Juventus’ history with the victory of the ninth-consecutive championship, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all the divisions of Italian football.”

Sarri, a former banker turned coach, was snapped up from Chelsea in July last year on a three-year deal. He was sacked after only one season in charge at the Olympic stadium in Turin.

The 61-year-old former Napoli coach lasted only 419 days at the club, winning the Serie A title, his first and Juventus’ ninth consecutive league title.

The Italian side was eliminated on away goals despite securing a 2-1 victory in the rearranged second-leg home match against Lyon.

This is the first time Juventus have failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League since 2015/16 under Massimiliano Allegri.
