The Kaduna state government says it will have no choice but to impose another lockdown if the cases of COVID-19 in the state continue to rise.

Amina Mohammad Baloni, the state’s health commissioner, stated this at a media briefing on Saturday.

The commissioner, who noted that the figures being recorded are similar to those of the first wave, said the conditions that compelled the state to lock down between April and June are now being replicated.

“In absolute and relative terms, Kaduna state is now recording high infection figures reminiscent of the first wave of COVID-19 spread in April, May and June 2020,” she said.

“The lowering of the infection rate following the first wave encouraged the government to approve the recommendation of the state COVID-19 task force for a significant reopening of the state.

“However, we are saddened to report that the conditions that compelled the 75-day lockdown of the state are now being replicated.”

According to Baloni, as of Friday, the state recorded 117 positive cases from 518 samples tested, which translates to one in four samples.

She, however, warned that a temporary lockdown may be imposed if cases continue to increase, and urged all residents to ensure strict compliance with the safety measures.

“If the rate of spread retains or exceeds the current pace, then we will have no option than to recommend the temporary closure of public places, including schools, markets, offices and places of worship,” the commissioner said.

“But there is a less costly way out. And that involves citizens living their best lives and conducting themselves in ways that do not spread the disease. That way, lives and livelihoods are protected while public health officers try to contain and manage the disease without causing painful disruptions.”
