The federal government through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has denied rumours that Nigeria’s database has been breached.

In a statement on Wednesday, NIMC said the data of Nigerians are safe in its custody and that the information of citizens being circulated on the internet is not from its database.

There have been speculations that some persons are selling off the data of Nigerians on the cyberspace.

The rumours were intensified after the agency said it lost access to the previous database of Nigerians in the custody of foreign vendors.

But in a statement shared with TheCable, Kayode Adegoke, NIMC spokesperson, said the information on breach of database is false.

“The NIMC would like to assure the public that there have been no such breaches or incidents. Investigations on the alleged data dump were found to be non-existent in the National Identity Database,” Adegoke said.

“The Commission investigated the data breach claim and found out that the database schema presented by the adversary does not tally with the existing schema of NIMC records. The data being posted by criminals purporting to contain citizens’ information is fake.

“The NIMC guarantees the security of the National Identity Database through various layers of security and can assure that no data was breached.

“The members of the general public are, therefore, enjoined to refrain from spreading false reports on the purported data breach.”
