The country recorded 645 new coronavirus infections across 19 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) on Saturday.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the new cases in its update for February 20, 2021.

However, the agency indicated that the Saturday report included data from Borno state, recorded over the last two days.

Lagos, the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, topped the list with 282 new positive samples, followed by Ogun and FCT, with 72 and 50 fresh infections respectively.

Other states that reported new cases are Kaduna (33), Osun (24), Imo (23), Abia (21), Borno (18), Oyo (17), Edo (15), Nasarawa (15), Taraba (14), Ekiti (11), Ondo (11), Plateau (11), Kano (10), Rivers (7), Delta (5), Bauchi (3), and Jigawa (3).

Also, 18 persons were said to have died of COVID-19 complications on Saturday, but the NCDC noted that it reported a backlog of deaths over the past month.

The current coronavirus fatality toll in Nigeria is 1,831.

Meanwhile, the daily count of recoveries declined by 53.4%, with 505 patients confirmed to have been discharged on Saturday.

According to the NCDC, 222 of the discharged patients are “community recoveries in Lagos state managed in line with guidelines”.

A total of 151,553 persons have tested positive for coronavirus in Nigeria, of which 21,668 are currently active cases.
