The supreme court has affirmed Ayo Fayose as the duly elected governor of Ekiti state.

Fayose, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had polled 203,090 votes to defeat Kayode Fayemi, the then incumbent governor, who polled 120,433 votes.

Fayemi contested under‎ the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The APC had alleged that the the June 21, 2014 poll was fraught with irregularities and approached the election tribunal and the appeal court to overturn Fayose’s victory but the case was dismissed.

Dissatisfied, the party went to the apex court, which gave its verdict on Tuesday.

Ruling on the appeal, a seven-man panel led by John Fabiyi, upheld the earlier decisions of the court of appeal and the tribunal.

The supreme court held that the appellant could not prove any of the grounds of appeal and dismissed the petition, resolving all the issues arising from it.

Fayose’s re-election as governor has been controversial, news website Sahara reporters publishing an audio tape of how some PDP stalwarts allegedly connived with the military to rig the polls.

Fayose is currently facing another impeachment trial by lawmakers of the APC in the state house of assembly.
