Like the favourite hymnal, this is our story, this our song. We will be highlighting seven of our special stories that have made a huge impact, driven change and sparked public discourse in Nigeria. 

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ROT AT QUEEN’S COLLEGE

All they wanted was education to better their lives and fulfill their dreams. But their souls became livid owing to years of corruption and negligence by the government and school authorities in whose shoulders they were supposed to fly their dreams. They died with their dreams!

Water, they say, is life. And food sustains the body. But when the water and foods are contaminated, life becomes a mirage. This is the story of the young girls at Queen’s College, Lagos.

An investigative series by TheCable showed the negligence by the school management to respond to complaints and years of decadence and rot of facilities in the college as well as the failure of officials of the federal ministry of education in Abuja in effectively and efficiently performing their regulatory and oversight functions over unity schools in the country, apparently, resulted in the tragic deaths of the three girls.

The school management had ignored concerned parents’ alarm and old students’ warnings on contaminated water sources and looming epidemic.

Following TheCable’s investigation, Adamu Adamu, minister of education, probed the college’s management over the death of the girls and a a number of changes were made, including provision of safe water.
