Bauchi kills 27,000 chickens to curb spread of bird flu

Samaila Burga, chairman, technical committee on the control of avian influenza, says 27,000 chickens have been killed to suppress the spread of bird flu in Bauchi state.

Bird flu is a disease caused by strains of the influenza virus that primarily affect birds.

On Friday, Burga said the disease broke out in two LGAs in the state.

According to NAN, nine poultry farms in the LGAs were affected but the 27,000 birds killed were from one poultry farm.

“The birds were depopulated to prevent other birds from contracting the deadly disease,” he said.

“The committee was constituted by the state government as part of efforts to stop the spread of bird flu, which had spread to two local government in the states.”

Burga also said 130 veterinary doctors have been deployed to 20 LGAs for surveillance.

He added that the government will begin the sensitisation of various stakeholders to educate them on how to detect affected live birds.

He urged poultry owners to adhere to the rules of setting up poultry and safety against the disease.

He assured of the commitment of the state government in tackling the virus and urged the people against eating affected birds.
