Nigeria on Monday recorded 42 cases of COVID-19. Here are five updates about the pandemic this Tuesday.
UN says world ”at war” against COVID-19
Antonio Guterres, United Nations secretary- general, says the world is at war against COVID-19.
Speaking at the World Health Organisation annual assembly on Monday, Guterres said all countries must be united in the fight against the pandemic.
“COVID-19 cannot be beaten one country at a time,” he said
“The most vulnerable are suffering most, and I fear this is far from over.”
“Sadly, unless we act now, we face a situation in which rich countries vaccinate the majority of their people and open their economies, while the virus continues to cause deep suffering by circling and mutating in the poorest countries.
“Further spikes and surges could claim hundreds of thousands of lives, and slow the global economic recovery.
“We are at war with a virus. We need the logic and urgency of a war economy, to boost the capacity of our weapons.”
Australian second-largest city re-impose COVID restrictions
Melbourne, capital of Victoria, has re-imposed COVID-19 restrictions amid new cases of infections.
According to the new restrictions, public meetings in Australia’s second-largest city will be limited to 30 people, and face masks will be compulsory for indoor settings.
James Merlino, Premier of Victoria, said the move will curb the spread of the infection.
“This is a responsible step that we need to take to get on top of this outbreak,” he said.
Nigeria records 42 records infections
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 42 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in seven states and the federal capital territory (FCT).
This is according to the agency’s update for May 24.
Lagos topped the list with 14 new cases, followed by Gombe with 11 infections and Ebonyi with five.
Other states that recorded infections include kano (5), FCT (4), Edo (1), and Kaduna (1), and Rivers (1).
No deaths were reported on Friday, leaving the fatality toll at 2,067.
Also, 16 persons were discharged after recovering from the virus.
Since Nigeria’s index case in February 2020, 166,061 cases have been confirmed while 156,492 persons have been discharged after recovering from the virus.
Pfizer starts trial to administer first COVID-19 booster shots
Pfizer, drugmaker, says it administered its first COVID-19 booster shots to participants.
The trial is studying the safety of the vaccines when they are co-administered and the immune responses produced by each vaccine.
The trial will include 600 adults over the age of 65, recruited from the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine phase 3 trial.
The participants must have received their second COVID-19 vaccine at least six months before entering the study.
US governor apologises for violating state COVID protocol
Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, has apologised for violating the state’s COVID public health protocol.
Whitmer apologised after a photo surfaced on social media wherein she was seen at a restaurant with friends without observing the COVID guideline.
“Throughout the pandemic, I’ve been committed to following public health protocols,” she said in a statement.
“On Saturday, I went with friends to a local restaurant. As more people arrived, the tables were pushed together. Because we were all vaccinated, we didn’t stop to think about it.
“In retrospect, I should have thought about it. I am human. I made a mistake, and I apologise.”
