The United States government has reached an agreement with Nigeria on sharing intelligence information that would aid the rescue of almost 300 Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko Haram.

According to Pentagon spokesman, Colonel Steve Warren, the agreement was struck over the weekend.

“We have finalised an agreement with the Nigerians to share intelligence with them — specifically intelligence relating to the kidnapped girls,” Warren told Reuters.

He revealed that although the U.S. military has been flying manned and unmanned surveillance aircraft over Nigeria, it had not directly shared intelligence with the Nigerian government because such protocols had not been finalised.

Warren also clarified that while the agreement would allow for a measure of intelligence-sharing between the U.S. military — “including aerial imagery” — with Nigeria, it did not cover the sharing of all “raw” intelligence info.
