The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has served Buruji Kashamu, the Ogun east senator-elect, a notice of application for his extradition to the United States.

Mitchell Ofoyeju, head, public affairs of the narcotic agency, said this in a statement issued on Tuesday.

He said NDLEA served the notice to Kashamu on June 1, adding that the application was contained in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/479/2015 and that a copy has been made available to the chief judge of the federal high court in Abuja.

The office of the attorney-general of the federation is seeking the extradition of Kashamu to answer alleged drug trafficking charges.

The agency had laid six days siege on Kashamu’s Lagos residence in the bid to arrest and extradite him but a federal high court in Lagos granted Kashamu’s prayers for an order restraining his arrest.

Kashamu had filed a suit against the inspector-general of police (IGP) and 13 others.

He alleged that there was a conspiracy between the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and the US to humiliate him and prevent his swearing-in as senator.

He accused Olusegun Obasanjo, former president of Nigeria of plotting to stop his progress politically and of desperation to use propaganda against him to give impression that he had been convicted for drug-related offences in the United Kingdom (UK) or US.

He claimed the international criminal police organisation (INTERPOL) was instigated to investigate him on the basis of these allegations in 2008, after which the agency published a report dated March 4, 2008, saying that he was never declared wanted.
