Japan has held a commemoration ceremony in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, which claimed more than 150,000 lives.

The ceremony, which held at Nagasaki Peace Park right under where the bomb exploded at 11:02AM on August 9, 1945, was attended by Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister.

After laying a wreath at the ceremony, Abe said: “As the only country attacked with an atomic bomb in war, I am renewing our determination to lead the global effort for nuclear disarmament, to create a world without such weapons.”

He promised that Japan will continue to abide by its long-held principles: not producing, possessing or allowing nuclear weapons on Japanese territory.
