Beni Lar, a member of the house of representatives, has asked youths to research and understand the laws of the countries they intend to travel to.

Lar, who is the chairman of the house of representatives committee on science and technology, gave the advice on Tuesday while briefing journalists in Abuja.

She said the federal government has secured the release of Dunchi Lar, a Nigerian prisoner, who was jailed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In August, Dunchi shot and shared a video showing immigration officers at the Dubai international airport allegedly mistreating Nigerians.

Though the videos were later deleted, Dunchi was reportedly sentenced to a one-year jail term for the conduct.

The lawmaker thanked the federal government and Geoffrey Onyeama, minister of foreign affairs, for the intervention to secure the release of Dunchi.

She said Dunchi “who was imprisoned for one year, is going to be released in December and will be home with the family”.

“I am very excited about this news,” she said.

“I thank the federal government for taking up this plea on behalf of Dunchi and her family, her constituents and the entire Nigerian youths for the UAE government to tamper justice with mercy.

“The UAE government responded to the Nigeria government. That means that diplomatic channels can work in all that Nigeria is facing.

“I, however, want to send a strong caution to all Nigerian youths to please know the laws of the countries you travel to and adhere to those laws. It is good that in this case the plea of the Nigerian government was listened to and the cries of the people of Nigeria were heard by the UAE, but some may not be so lucky.

“So please Nigerian youths, when you travel abroad, be law-abiding citizens. Know the laws of those countries and abide by them.”
